Damit eine astronomische Montierung präzise auf ein eingestelltes Objekt ausgerichtet bleibt, muss die Nachführung kontrolliert werden. Diese Kontrolle kann über ein kleines Fernrohr erfolgen, das parallel zum Teleskop montiert wird. Dieses Fernrohr wird Guidescope oder auch Leitrohr genannt.

Im Unterschied zu einem normalen Sucherfernrohr erlauben Guidescopes den Anschluss einer Kamera für das Autoguiding genannte Verfahren der Nachführkontrolle. Guidescopes können auch als Sucherfernrohre verwendet werden. Das dafür benötigte Okular ist aber meist nicht im Lieferumfang enthalten.
